How do I use Nasal CPAP?
HOW DO I USE NASAL CPAP?
Nasal CPAP is a permanent treatment for OSA and should be used whenever you sleep. Symptoms will always reappear if nasal CPAP is stopped. You should not discontinue nasal CPAP without first consulting your physician. 4
ADJUSTING TO SLEEPING WITH YOUR CPAP MACHINE:
- Put the mask and machine on just as you are ready to go to sleep.
- Relax and breathe slowly and regularly against the flow of air through the mask.
- Do not fight the pressure. It may feel unusual at first but it will not harm you.
- If your nose becomes dry and irritated a humidifier is also available. Your doctor may also be able to prescribe certain medications to clear your nasal passages.
- The first 30 days of your trial are the most important. Be tolerant of small problems that may arise during this time. Work closely with your therapist to communicate any problems or concerns. 2
EQUIPMENT CLEANING AND MAINTANCE:
To get the most life out of your CPAP machine, proper maintenance and cleaning should be strictly followed.
Clean the mask and tubing ever few days. Gently wash the mask and flexible tubing in a solution of warm water and mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly and let air-dry. This will extend the life of your mask by preventing the build-up of facial oils, dust, dirt, and/or bacteria. (Remember to wash your face before going to bed.)
Wipe the outside of the CPAP machine once a week with a damp cloth.
Your headgear may be washed in a laundry machine once a week with a mild detergent. DO NOT DRY IT IN THE DRYER! Hang to dry only.
Humidifier chambers should be emptied and cleaned routinely to prevent contamination and transmission of airborne bacteria.
WARRANTY COVERAGE
All machines carry a two-three year warranty from the date of purchase. Masks and hosing are considered a personal item and are not covered with your warranty. In the event that your machine breaks down, Coastal Sleep Homecare will provide you with a temporary loaner while your machine is being fixed. Repair times may vary depending on the problem. Usually 2-4 weeks. Machine problems are extremely rare if your machine is properly cared for.
